TENON REPLACEMENT

This procedure involves replacement of the male side of the joint and is accomplished by removing the remains of the broken tenon, counter boring the body, and installing a new tenon. The new tenon is custom and precision machined using the dimensions of the receiver to ensure accurate fit.

The material used for making the new tenon can be either ABS plastic or wood (grenadilla for clarinets and oboes, hard maple for bassoons). Note that ABS is a very high quality thermoplastic that offers superior strength.

RECEIVER REPLACEMENT

This procedure involves replacement of the female side of the joint and is accomplished by removing the remains of the broken receiver, counter boring the body, and installing a new receiver. The new receiver is custom and precision machined using the dimensions of the tenon to ensure accurate fit.

The material used for making the new receiver can be either ABS plastic or wood (grenadilla for clarinets and oboes, hard maple for bassoons). Note that ABS is a very high quality thermoplastic that offers superior strength.

OPEN TONE HOLE REPLACEMENT

This procedure involves the replacement of broken open tone holes (ring key tone holes where the finger, not a pad, seals the opening) The broken tone hole is cut away and the body is counterbored. A new tone hole is precision machined from either ABS plastic or grenadilla wood and fitted to the body.

BARREL RESIZING

This procedure entails shortening a clarinet barrel in order to raise the overall pitch of the instrument. Specify desired length to be removed. Please note that a barrel shortened by 1mm (.039") will raise the pitch approximately 5-8 cents. Shortening the barrel by more than 2mm is not recommended as this will cause the instrument to not play in tune with itself.

CRACK REPAIR

Flush banding is a procedure which entails the installation of a nickel / silver ring or band around the circumference of the body in the area of the crack(s). Using a lathe, a narrow slot (approx.1/4" wide) is cut into the body and the band is then compressed around the body and down into the slot. The band is then trimmed down and polished so that its surface is left flush with the surface of the body. One band is generally sufficient for most repairs. The crack(s) is filled with black epoxy, and smoothed and finished to blend with the rest of the instrument body.

When installing a flush band on the top end of an upper oboe section it is necessary to cut away the crown (the 'knob' around the reed tube) so that the band can be slid over the body. A new crown is machined using black ABS plastic and installed back onto the body.
